Maximize Efficiency: Migrating IBM WebMethods to Azure

Operating as an industry leader across seven countries on three continents, the organization sought to modernize its integration infrastructure to reduce costs, enhance scalability, and improve reliability. Due to NDA clauses, the company cannot be named.
Key initiatives included:
- Lift & shift an existing IBM webMethods on-premises installation to a new Azure Private Cloud instance to leverage cloud-native scalability and cost efficiency.
- Migrate existing Oracle Data Integrator (ODI) footprint to webMethods for streamlined data processing and improved system unification.
The project faced challenges due to multi-time zone teams and a lack of documentation for existing integrations, thus requiring in-depth analysis and possible reverse engineering.

Faced with an eight-month legally binding contract, the team at Orange Oranges adopted a phased approach to meet the organization’s modernization requirements efficiently and within the deadline.
- Phase 1: Focused on the lift & shift of the existing webMethods.
- Phase 2: Addressed the migration of Oracle Data Integrator (ODI) footprint to webMethods.
Phase 1 key steps included:
- Formulate a lift & shift strategy: discover integration footprint, customizations and dependencies.
- Environment setup: prepare new environment, ensure correct licensing, backup existent environment.
- Execute lift & shift: export configuration, services, packages, database, and deploy components.
- Perform functional, performance, security, end-to-end testing; ensure no data loss or integration failures.
- Go-live: switch traffic, monitor, and troubleshoot system performance during initial days.
- Decommission: gradually phase out the old environment after confirming stability for new environment.
Phase 2 key steps included:
- Inventory existent integrations, assess complexity and dependencies, create migration roadmap.
- Analyze existing ODI workflows and build equivalent IBM webMethods logic, transformations and maps.
- Configure connections, adapters, ports and address error handling.
- Test and validate new integration behavior and data reconciliation.
- Deploy into production, monitor initial runs and document all new integrations for knowledge transfer.
The successful execution of these initiatives modernized the organization’s integration architecture, positioning it for future growth and operational efficiency.
